Interviewee / Respondent Incentive/Compensation

We have been involved in a project which required two or more contacts withe the same interviewee over time. There was substantial fall off in the participation as the study proceeded.

There has been substantial discussion on the effect and ethics of compensating interviewees. Does anyone have any experience or comments? Can you recommend any articles (JM, JMR etc)
