Newbie to research software

I'm a newbie to research (haven't even broken into the market yet) but have an MBA in Marketing and would like to take some courses to help better my chances at landing a position. I thought SAS and SPSS would be best for me to take but they are not available to me (I'm limited with where I can take courses). How do you feel about SQL server analysis?? Since I haven't worked with any of these I would not know. Also perhaps someone can explain the difference between these since they seem so much alike to me.

ANY suggestions as to what would be the best software for me to learn? Hopefully I can enroll in one.
